Ein Gelber Zwerg ist ein Stern, der auf der Hauptreihe steht und mit der Sonne in Masse sowie in Größe vergleichbar ist. Die Hauptreihe macht fast 90 Prozent aller Sterne aus und verläuft im Hertzsprung-Russell-Diagramm diagonal von der oberen Mitte nach rechts unten zu den roten, kleinen Sternen. Die Sonne selbst gehört zur Gruppe der Gelben Zwerge, die aber – im Gegensatz zu Begriffen wie Weißer Zwerg oder Roter Riese – kein feststehender Begriff ist. Man nimmt mit diesem Namen nur Bezug auf die relativ geringe Größe dieser „Durchschnittssterne“ (im Vergleich z. B. zu Roten Riesen) und auf die gelbliche Farbe. Gelbe Zwerge weisen mit Massen von 0,8 bis 1,1 Sonnenmassen Oberflächentemperaturen von etwa 5300 K bis 6.000 K auf und entsprechen der Spektralklasse G der Leuchtkraftklasse V. Die meisten der Gelben Zwergsterne gehören der Sternpopulation I an.
