In astronomia, una nana rossa (o stella M V) è una stella piccola e relativamente fredda (Teff ≤ 3500 K), di tipo spettrale M (colorazione fotosferica in media gialla intensa-arancione), posta sulla sequenza principale del diagramma Hertzsprung-Russell. Si tratta della tipologia stellare più diffusa nell'universo: le nane rosse costituiscono infatti almeno il 67,5% di tutte le stelle presenti nella Via Lattea e recenti studi indicano che possano essere anche l'80%. Hanno masse comprese tra 0,4 e 0,08 masse solari, che costituisce il limite minimo perché una stella possa dirsi tale: al di sotto di questo limite infatti non si creano le condizioni di temperatura e pressione tali da innescare le reazioni di fusione dell'idrogeno in elio. Al di sotto di questa massa limite si trovano le nane brune, oggetti che possiedono una massa troppo piccola per compiere la fusione nucleare, ma comunque nettamente superiore a quella di un pianeta.
